چکیده

Simultaneous in situ measurements of N20 and CH4 were made with a tunable diode laser spectrometer (ALIAS II) aboard the Observations from the Middle Stratosphere (OMS) balloon platform from New Mexico, Alaska, and Brazil during 1996 and 1997. We find different compact relationships of CH4 with N20 in the tropics and extra-tropics because mixing is slow between these regions. Transport into the extra-tropics from the tropics or the polar vortex leads to deviations from the normal compact relationship. We use measured N20 and CH4 and a simple model to quantify entrainment of mid-latitude stratospheric air into the tropics. The entrainment ime scale is estimated to be 16 (+ 17, -8) months for altitudes between 20 and 28 km. The fraction of tropical air entrained from the extratropical stratosphere is 50% (+18%, -30%) at 20 km, increasing to 78% (+11%, 19%) at 28 km.

Stratospheric lifetimes of CFC-12, CCl4, CH4, CH3Cl and N2 from measurements made by the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment-Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS)

Long lived halogen-containing compounds are important atmospheric constituents since they can act both as a source of chlorine radicals, which go on to catalyse ozone loss, and as powerful greenhouse gases. The long-term impact of these species on the ozone layer is dependent on their stratospheric lifetimes. Using observations from the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectro...

Simultaneous ground-based observations of O3, HCl, N2O, and CH4 over Toronto, Canada by three Fourier transform spectrometers with different resolutions

An intercomparison of three Fourier transform spectrometers (FTSs) with significantly different resolutions is presented. The highest-resolution instrument has a maximum optical path difference of 250 cm, and the two lowerresolution instruments have maximum optical path differences of 50 cm and 25 cm. The results indicate that the two lower-resolution instruments can retrieve total column amoun...

Methane and the Ch4–related Greenhouse Effect over the past 400 Million Years

Natural variations in the tropospheric CH4 concentration, excluding short bursts from geospheric reservoirs, have been estimated for the past 400 Ma by scaling a wetland CH4 emission estimate for the middle Pliocene (ca. 3.6–2.6 Ma) by the relative rate of coal basin deposition at any given time in the past. Wetland CH4 fluxes were used as inputs into the Cambridge 2-D chemistry-transport model...

Probing stratospheric transport and chemistry with new balloon and aircraft observations of the meridional and vertical N2O isotope distribution

A comprehensive set of stratospheric balloon and aircraft samples was analyzed for the position-dependent isotopic composition of nitrous oxide (N2O). Results for a total of 220 samples from between 1987 and 2003 are presented, nearly tripling the number of mass-spectrometric N2O isotope measurements in the stratosphere published to date. Cryogenic balloon samples were obtained at polar (Kiruna...

Retrieval of tropospheric column-averaged CH4 mole fraction by solar absorption FTIR-spectrometry using N2O as a proxy

Tropospheric column-averaged CH4 mole fractions were derived from ground-based column absorption measurements. The method uses stratospheric N2O columns to correct for the stratospheric contribution to the CH4 total column. The method was applied to four Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) sites covering locations from the Northern Arctic to the tropics. It performs well for all sites...
